PURPOSE OF EDUCATION
What is the real purpose of education?
Our ideas of education take too narrow and too low a range. There is need of a broader scope, a higher aim. True education means more than the pursual of a certain course of study. It means more than a preparation for the life that now is. It has to do with the whole being, and with the whole period of existence possible to man. It is the harmonious development of the physical, the mental, and the spiritual powers. It prepares the student for the joy of service in this world and for the higher joy of wider service in the world to come. (Education 13).
BIBLE & EDUCATION
Does the Bible still have any relevance in education today?
As a means of intellectual training, the Bible is more effective than any other book, or all other books combined. The greatness of its themes, the dignified simplicity of its utterances, the beauty of its imagery, quicken and uplift the thoughts as nothing else can. No other study can impart such mental power as does the effort to grasp the stupendous truths of revelation. The mind thus brought in contact with the thoughts of the Infinite cannot but expand and strengthen...
In its wide range of style and subjects the Bible has something to interest every mind and appeal to every heart. In its pages are found history the most ancient; biography the truest to life; principles of government for the control of the state, for the regulation of the household--principles that human wisdom has never equaled. It contains philosophy the most profound, poetry the sweetest and the most sublime, the most impassioned and the most pathetic. Immeasurably superior in value to the productions of any human author are the Bible writings, even when thus considered;… (Education 124-5).
A BETTER OPTION
Is there a better option for educating my children than the local schools?
We have a special work to do in educating and training our children, that they may not, either in attending school or in associating with others, be influenced by those of corrupt habits.
The education that is generally given in the schools of the world is not that which can be accepted as true education. Educators of youth should be Christians, who are themselves under the discipline of God.
Let us view the case correctly. Children are the heritage of the Lord, and are to be so educated that they may be the younger members of the Lord's family, prepared by proper instruction to serve the Lord in their childhood life. Shall the members of the church give means to advance the cause of Christ among others, and then let their own children carry on the work and service of Satan?. . . O, for a clearer perception of what we might accomplish if we would learn of Jesus!.
We may bring hundreds and thousands of children to Christ if we will work for them. Let all who read these words be melted and subdued. Let us in our educational work embrace far more of the children and youth than we have done, and there will be a whole army of missionaries raised up to work for God. (Education of the Children, The Advocate).
"A truly Christian education is possible only when Christian education underlies not a part, but all, of the curriculum of the school. True learning and true piety go hand in hand, and Christianity embraces the whole of life—those are great central convictions that underlie the Christian school." (J. Gresham Machen).
SCHOOL AT HOME
Could I teach my child myself?
Teaching is as natural for parents as learning is for children. Loving is sharing; and sharing—when it involves ideas—is teaching. You teach as you communicate with their children, as you take care of them, as you play with them. To a young child the world is new and strange and interesting. As he or she grows a little older it is sometimes frightening. You as a parent are the interpreter. Your child’s natural curiosities, fears, needs and wants are your cues. (School at Home 23).
We firmly believe that the greatest teaching talent in the world lies in the warm responsive and consistent parent whose love makes the needs of his children his highest concern. If anyone disagrees, ask him for his evidence. Parents’ daily on e-to-one example amounts to master teaching at the highest level.
There are a lot of very good nursery schools, kindergartens and elementary (primary) schools in the world. We have visited many and administered quite a few. Yet there are none whose programs can match education by loving parents of even modest ability, working with their own children in the simplest of homes. And we must not lose this heritage and art…
For the first eight to ten years at lease—until their values are formed—most parents, even average parents, are far the best people for their children. And those that are not, usually can and should be. To be sure there are areas of child care in which others can outdo parents—such as physicians, nurses and specially teachers in music and the arts. But in general the best teacher ofr care-giver cannot match a parent or even ordinary education and experience. Dr Geber’s studies in Uganda proved that even tribal mothers who did not know how to read or write reared children who were more intellectually and socially alert and secure by Western standards than well-educated mothers. The difference? Tribal moters were close to their children. So-called higher class mothers tended to share the care of their children with others. (Home Grown Kids 26,27).
PROTECTING MY CHILD
Is secular education safe for Christians?
"I advise no one to place his child where the Scriptures do not reign paramount. Every institution in which men are not increasingly occupied with the Word of God must become corrupt...I am much afraid that schools will prove to be the great gates of hell unless they diligently labor in explaining the Holy Scriptures, engraving them in the hearts of youth." (Martin Luther).
The school system that ignores God teaches its pupils to ignore God; and this is not neutrality. It is the worst form of antagonism, for it judges God to be unimportant and irrelevant in human affairs. This is atheism." (Gordon H. Clark).
How is it possible to educate my children to be a committed Christians in this day and age?
Therfore the Christian seeks an education for himself and his children of a different order from that of the world. The goals are different; the teachers are teachers are different; the curriculum is different; methodology is different; the context is different; and therefore the product is different. Our ambitions are to glorify God.
Authentic education will be evidenced by the true conversion of the life expressed in conformity to the will of God. It will teach the student the principles of Christian living. It will provide access to an environment which will prepare the student in service for God and man. It will teach the child the principles of Christian faith so that all will have power over Satan’s temptations and deceptions…
It is the responsibility of parents and teachers to lead the children and youth to understand that they have been created to develop a life that will honour God by serving their fellow human beings. This can best be accomplished when parents and teachers model the life of Christ themselves and young people are taught to recognize the high and holy destiny to which God has called them. They need to understand that they are invited to be the sons and daughters of God—princes and princesses of the King of the Universe. Man was fearfully marred by sin, and God through Christ alone has the power to bring members of the race back to the image of their Maker. (Education for Excellence: The Christian Advantage 15,16).
